Ushie Uguamaye, Also known as Raye, a serving corps member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has found herself in the center of a growing controversy after posting a viral TikTok video criticizing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration over the worsening economic situation in Nigeria.
The video, which gained widespread attention across social media platforms, saw Raye voicing her frustrations about the rising cost of living, hardship faced by citizens, and the general state of the nation under the current leadership. Her candid remarks struck a chord with many Nigerians, but also drew sharp criticism from government loyalists.
Summoned by NYSC, But No Show by Officials

Following the uproar, Raye was reportedly summoned by the NYSC Local Government Inspector (LGI) in Eti-Osa, Lagos, and asked to appear at the NYSC office on Monday at 10:00 a.m. However, in a surprising turn of events, upon her arrival at the office, accompanied by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and a team of lawyers, the NYSC official who issued the summon was nowhere to be found.
Speaking to the media after the visit, Sowore expressed disappointment over the absence of the LGI, stating, “We came here ready to defend Raye’s right to free speech, but the officials who summoned her failed to show up. This speaks volumes about the intimidation tactics being used against young Nigerians who dare to speak the truth.”
Public Outcry and Calls for Free Speech Protection
The incident has sparked a nationwide debate on free speech and the right of citizens to criticize government policies without fear of intimidation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, along with prominent activist and comedian Mr. Macaroni, has condemned any attempts to victimize Raye for expressing her personal opinions.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) also weighed in, urging the government to exercise patience and tolerance, as her remarks reflect the frustrations of many Nigerians. TUC President Festus Osifo stated, “She spoke out of frustration, not rebellion. The government must understand that these are the real struggles of ordinary Nigerians.”
What Next for Raye?

As of now, the NYSC has not issued an official statement on whether Raye will face disciplinary action, leaving many wondering what the next steps will be. Meanwhile, Nigerians continue to rally behind the young corps member, with hashtags like #IStandWithRaye trending across social media.
