On Monday, 16th December, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) held its Award-event at Marrakesh, Morocco, where Adedamola Lookman won the Men’s Player Of The Year and was crowned with the CAF player of the year award 2024. This win has been making headlines, as it marks history for the winning player as well as his country and club. Here are some details.
Adedamola Lookman Wins CAF Player Of The Year Award
With this tremendous win, Adedamola Lookman became the second Nigerian in a row to win the Player Of The Year award, following Victor Osimhen last year.
Lookman won this award after competing with Simon Adingra of Ivory Coast, Serhou Guirassy of Guinea, Ronwen Williams of South Africa, and Achraf Hakimi of Morocco. The voting panel consisted of CAF’s technical committee and African professionals, coaches, and players.
In the same event, Barbra Banda, an Orlando Pride player from Zambia, won the Women’s Player Of The Year award in 2024. Banda is the first Zambian to receive this crown, following a remarkable season where she led her club to a domestic double in both the NWSL Shield and Championship.
2024 Marks An Outstanding Year For Adedamola Lookman
The 27-year-old Adedamola Lookman emerged as a strong contender for the award following an outstanding 2023/2024 season.
Earlier in the year, Lookman played an important role in his Italian club’s historic European triumph, scoring a remarkable hat-trick in the final against Bayer Leverkusen. This feat made him the sixth player to achieve a treble in a European club final, ever since the fifth player did in 1975.
Also this year, Adedamola Lookman shone at the Africa Cup of Nations, where he was named in the tournament’s best 11. His three goals were crucial in helping the Super Eagles secure a second-place finish behind Ivory Coast in February.
In the same 2024, Lookman stood out as the only African on the men’s Ballon d’Or shortlist, where he placed 14th. Therefore, 2024 has been a remarkable year for Adedamola Lookman, the Atalanta player from Nigeria who won the CAF Player of the Year award.
