Popular social commentator and activist Martins Vincent Otse, widely known as VeryDarkMan (VDM), was arrested by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on May 2, 2025, sparking widespread public outcry and debate. The anti-graft agency confirmed the arrest was based on multiple petitions alleging financial misconduct and other cyber-related offenses.
The Arrest and EFCC’s Statement
According to an official EFCC release, VDM had been invited several times to respond to allegations, which he reportedly ignored. As a result, operatives detained him in Abuja for questioning.
The Commission acted based on several petitions it received, and his repeated refusal to honor our invitations led to his arrest,” said an EFCC spokesperson.
EFCC clarified that the arrest was not related to Otse’s frequent criticism of the Commission on social media, although they admitted awareness of his “unguarded utterances” toward law enforcement operations.
Legal Team Responds
Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju, who visited VDM in custody, provided a contrasting narrative. He stated that as of his visit, EFCC had failed to present a formal petition or detailed reason for the arrest.
There is no official complaint or documented charge. This arrest appears arbitrary and without legal foundation,” Adeyanju told press outlets.
Public Outrage and Protests
The arrest triggered immediate protests in Abuja, with supporters of the activist calling for his unconditional release. Demonstrators decried the EFCC’s tactics, labeling the move an attack on freedom of speech and the misuse of power against outspoken critics of the government.
The backlash extended online and across Nigeria’s political landscape. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and pop star Davido both condemned the arrest, urging the government to protect civil liberties and ensure due process.
The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) also released a statement criticizing what they called “a dangerous trend of silencing voices of dissent.”
Bail and Upcoming Arraignment
Despite being held over the weekend, EFCC confirmed on May 6 that VDM has been granted administrative bail. His legal team is currently working to meet the bail conditions, after which he is expected to be released.
However, the situation remains tense. The EFCC has announced plans to file multiple charges, including alleged cyberstalking, financial crimes, and other violations under the Cybercrimes Act.
VDM is expected to be arraigned in court on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
