The Nigerian Senate has suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan for six months following a series of heated clashes with Senate President Godswill Akpabio. The decision, made during a tense plenary session, resulted in Akpoti being escorted out of the chamber, marking a dramatic moment in the unfolding political feud.
The suspension stemmed from allegations of misconduct and what the Senate leadership described as a breach of parliamentary rules. Tensions between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Akpabio had been building for weeks, particularly after she accused him of sidelining her in Senate affairs and allegedly making inappropriate remarks about her. The conflict reached a boiling point when Akpoti-Uduaghan reportedly disrupted Senate proceedings while challenging Akpabio’s authority.
Following a review by the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions, lawmakers voted in favor of her suspension, citing “gross misconduct” and “bringing the Senate into disrepute.” The decision was met with strong reactions, with some senators supporting the move, while others described it as an attempt to silence dissenting voices.
As security personnel enforced the suspension, Akpoti-Uduaghan was led out of the chamber, a moment that quickly went viral on social media. Her supporters have condemned the decision, calling it politically motivated and a targeted attack on her outspokenness.
The suspension adds another layer to the already tense relationship between the senator and Akpabio, especially as Akpoti-Uduaghan recently filed a ₦100 billion defamation lawsuit against him. Political analysts warn that the controversy could have wider implications for Senate unity and public perception of its leadership.
